| Ophelia's Lament by Matt Hughes - 8.5 x 11 Product Detail |
| Comments: In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia is depicted as a very tragic character. Not only does she loose her beloved father but her love for Hamlet is rejected. Because of this sorrow, Ophelia eventually goes insane with grief and commits suicide.
In this illustration we see the moments before Ophelia decides to end her life. Her sorrow is so immense that she believes she has been left utterly alone and unloved. She feels that if she ended her life no one would hold grief in their heart for her. Because of this she is spreading the pedals of a flower over the very body of water that will soon take her life. In essence, she is expressing the lament of her passing because no one else will.-"M.H."
