"Hidden’, began from a feeling I had about some of the sea coves we discovered on sabbatical to Cornwall. Weathered holes which concealed a host of mysterious life. It developed into a piece about vulnerability, about sanctuary and secret places, and it brings to end a series of four paintings which began with the work ‘Alive’ and has concluded with a statement about veiled emotion, and the cycle of life and death, since the opening to the cavern is womblike, the mermaids posture foetal. There is also a death skull visible in the rocks of the bottom right hand corner, a shadow in the dark. Her tail was painted using gold paint, which I’ve not used before. It signifies the preciousness of her life force, and the spiral decorations are further representative of life’s cycle. This piece was made available only as an original work, there shall be no prints made from it, and in the spirit of its theme, a hidden element was painted into the piece, which was only viewable to the buyer."-DG
