rnChipmunk Minutiae Comprised of 25 species of small, striped, terrestrial squirrels. All species active only during the day. All but one species are North American, living from Southern Canada to Central Mexico. Ecologically versatile, living in all types of terrain. Expert tree climbers. Construct burrows that can be 30 feet in length, with multiple entrances, and 2-3 feet below ground. Their sleeping quarters are kept extremely clean. Omnivorous diets, consisting of seeds, berries, grains, nuts, bird eggs, plants, fungi and insects. Its cheeks can expand to 3 times its head size. 2-8 young are born in spring or summer after a month’s gestation. A second, smaller litter may be produced in regions with long summers. Hibernate from late Fall to early Spring, waking to eat every two weeks. Can live in the wild up to 7 years.
