Koala Minutiae Tree-dwelling marsupial of coastal eastern Australia. 24-33 inches long and weighs 30 lbs. Sometimes called “koala bear”, but not a member of the bear family. Feeds selectively on leaves of eucalyptus trees. This diet is poor in nutrients, providing little spare energy. Spends long hours (up to 19 hours a day) sitting or sleeping in trees, exposed to the elements but insulated by thick fur.
Generally solitary. Mating occurs between December and March, during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer. Births are single, after a gestation of 35 days. Twins very rare. The baby, called a joey, is only 1” long at birth. Peaks its head out of the pouch after 5 months. After weaning, the joey emerges from pouch and clings to mother’s back until a year old.
Young females disperse to nearby areas at this time; young males often stay in mother’s home range for 2-3 years. Lives 15 years in the wild; a bit longer in captivity. In the 1920’s and 30’s, killed in large number for their fur, and numbers dwindled from several million to a few hundred thousand. Today, they are again widespread. As with most native Australian animals, cannot be kept as a pet without a permit.
