Johann Sebastian Bach - New Pot Bellys

Johann Sebastian Bach is considered by many to be the greatest composer in the history of western music. Born into a musical German family in 1685, he received his earliest instruction from his father. At the age of 18, he was employed as an organist, where he performed, composed, taught and built organs. Bach spent the height of his working life in a Lutheran church in Leipzig as both organist and music director. His large output of organ music is the measure by which all later efforts have been judged. His other solo keyboard music is held in equally high esteem, especially for its exploration of the contrapuntal fugue, with The Well-Tempered Clavier still the primary means by which these forms are taught. His chamber music is similarly lofty; the sets for solo violin and cello are the summits of their respective genres. Bach's large-scale sacred choral music is unique in its scope and development, the Passions and B Minor Mass having led to the rediscovery of his music in the 19th century. His large output of concerti includes some of the finest examples of the period, including the Brandenburg Concertos. Due to the numerical symbolism and mathematical exactitude of his music, Bach is regarded as one of the great geniuses of western civilization, even by those who are not involved with music. Four of his children became noted musicians. Bach died in 1750.
