Breed noted for its loose skin and wrinkles.

Once considered one of the rarest breeds, its numbers have grown significantly.

An ancient breed, believed to have originated in China about 200 B.C.

Originally used for hunting and guarding, began to fall out of favor with introduction of larger breeds from the West.

In late 1940’s, Chinese Communist Party levied high taxes on dogs and then banned breeding.

Breed introduced to the U.S. in 1966. Not recognized by American Kennel Club until 1991.

Name means “sand-skin” in Cantonese. Refers to its short, rough coat, which may be cream, red or brown.

Medium sized – stands 18” to 20”.

Weighs 45-60 lbs.

Heavily wrinkled as a puppy. Loses most of its creases, except for face and shoulders, as it matures.

Has unusual blue-black tongue.

Suffers from many health problems due to irresponsible breeding.
